Why Prep Work Makes for Good Blogs

When you establish a blog that is part of your business website or one that is an independent business all it’s own, it is essential that you do put a bit of though into it long before you start posting your first pieces.

Maintaining a blog may sound like an easy enough way to get your promotions underway but in order to have a successful blog, you must be committed to writing, dedicated to interacting, and prepared to have some logic thrown into the mix.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your blog before you even go live:

Think and Think Some More

The majority of blogs are not started to only last a week or two. But sadly, many without that intention still shut down or go to status inactive in just a short period of time. When you contemplate starting a blog, consider what angle you want to take and what kind of information you want to provide. While some blogs are successful just tossing readers random bits of information, more often then not, you’ll need to give readers top of the line stuff to keep them coming back day after day. Ask yourself “What can I provide my target audience they can’t find anywhere else?” and then ask “How can I go about creating a blog with longevity?”

Create An Outline

When you have considered the route you plan to take with your blog (niche topics, industry-related information, you’ll need to find a little more direction. A blog outline is a great way to plan out what you want to say in a logical way. An outline can be a tremendous tool also for figuring out if you are going in the right direction. For instance, if you can only come up with two months of topic ideas before exhausting your list, you are likely better off finding a new angle for your blog. Write down all ideas as they come to you and then use a more formal outline form to arrange the topics logically. You want to create a consistent story that faithful readers can follow but ones where newcomers can still feel they have received valuable information.

Pre-Write Articles Often

It can be so easy to forget to update your blog on a consistent basis. With all of the other trappings of business, a blog can easily be pushed aside in favor of other matters. However, not putting the time and effort into a blog will surely not pay off in the long run. Most blog platforms will allow you to pre-post your articles for the future. Write as many of the articles as you can and post them all at the same time. You can spread out your publishing dates ahead of time. Set aside time where you can create content all at once. If you are going to rely on writing one post per day, the likelihood that your plan will fall through the cracks is strong. Write in bulk and post in bulk so you’ll have less chance of forgetting.

Stay On Schedule

Posting content to a blog should be considered a regular task of your business. Keep your writing duties on your schedule so you remain committed to doing the work. You can also outsource your writing assignments to a freelancer to save you time and, if you are not a strong writer, provide you with better content.

Be Flexible with Outline

Remember that a blog can be a promotions resource for your company. While continuing to follow the outline you created, you should also account for any upcoming events, current company news, and any promotional sales you are planning. Incorporating current, what’s happening now news will certainly be of value to your readers. Don’t forget to use the blog as a place where readers are eligible to receive exclusive news and offers found no where else.
